Anti-social behavior
There is no precise definition of antisocial behaviour. Broadly, it is acting in a way that causes or is likely to cause alarm or distress to one or more people in another household. To be antisocial behaviour, the behaviour must be persistent.
There may be a fine line between antisocial behaviour and disputes between neighbours over relatively minor inconveniences, although these may, if persistent, become antisocial behaviour.
Anti-Social Behavior: This term generally refers to actions that deviate significantly from established social norms. Behavior that fits within this definition will vary to some degree, based on the social environment in which the child lives. This kind of behavior commonly includes skipping school, getting into fights, running away from home, persistently lying, using illegal drugs or alcohol, stealing, vandalizing property, engaging in aggressive or violent behavior towards other individuals, and violating school rules, home rules or local criminal laws.
Some examples of anti-social behaviour:
- noise
- rowdy behaviour such as shouting, swearing and fighting
- intimidation of neighbours and others through threats or actual violence
- harassment, including racial harassment or sectarian aggression
- verbal abuse
- systematic bullying of children in public recreation grounds, on the way to school or even on school grounds, if normal school disciplinary procedures do not stop the behaviour
- abusive behaviour aimed at causing distress or fear to certain people, for example, elderly or disabled people
- driving in an inconsiderate or careless way, for example, drivers congregating in an area for racing
- dumping rubbish
- animal nuisance, including dog fouling
- vandalism, property damage and graffiti.
- How might anti social behaviour be defined?
- Which anti-social behaviour is most serious and why?
- Which behaviour that has been described as anti-social do you think might be a matter of opinion? (For example, one person might think spitting is anti-social, while another might disagree.)
